RESEARCH
I had been performing first-principles electronic structure calculations for a wide variety of materials. The calculations are based on the so-called "density-functional theory (DFT)", which in contrast to model-based calculations does not need phenomenological parameters and is thus a powerful tool for materials science. My primary interest has been magnetic and ferroelectric materials.
For systems without the space-inversion symmetry, we can expect novel spin splitting of electronic bands if the spin-orbit interaction is substantially strong. I will try to clarify the consequence of this spin splitting --- how it affects the normal-state conductivity and superconductivity. I will also try to find new topological insulators by means of the first-principles calculations.
