RESEARCH
I have been working on topological structures in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of cold atomic gases. When the system has internal degrees of freedom, atoms are condensed into various phases which are characterized with different symmetries. In such a condensate, various types of topological excitations, such as vortices, monopoles, and skyrmions, can be accommodated. In my previous works, I have proposed an experimental scheme to produce and detect a new type of topological excitation, a knot, investigated the domain growth dynamics due to vortex-antivortex pair annihilation, and predicted the appearance of various vortex lattice structures in a spin-orbit coupled spinor BEC.
In this project, I investigate the topological band structure of the excitation spectrum from a BEC. Since the low-energy excitation band strongly depends on the condensate wave function, we expect that the topology of the excitation band can be changed by manipulating the condensate wave function. I will further investigate the dynamics after the topological phase transition triggered by the change in the condensate wave function.
